Our class has a subscription to an online reading program at Raz-Kids.com. Raz-Kids helps students improve their reading skills as they listen to a book read at a smooth rate with expression (to hear a fluent reader). Then, if your computer has a built-in record function, they can record themselves reading the same book for me to listen to later. Or, students can read the book to themselves or aloud for practice. Interactive quizzes are available at the end of each book to check for understanding (comprehension). As an incentive for reading online, students earn stars for completed assignments and can use the stars to “buy” items to decorate their “Raz Rocket.”

Here is how to access the website and your child’s reading assignment from any computer connected to the Internet:
1. Go to www.raz-kids.com from your Internet browser and click on the Log In tab.
2. Type in my username cwoita and click the Log In button .
3. Find your child’s name on the chart and click on that button.
4. Enter your child’s password (two pictur).
5. The books in your child’s assignment will appear on a personal assignment page. Your child can choose to listen, read, or take a quiz by clicking on the symbols below each book. Students should only take the quiz after listening to and reading the book at least once. Your child should be able to pass the comprehension quiz in one or two tries. If the comprehension scores are low, your child is reading at a “frustration level” and I need to adjust the level of books. Please let me know if you notice your child having troubles with their comprehension.
Remember, the more your child reads, the better reader he or she will become!
